phpFoX vs. phpIzabi
phpIzabi has quite a lot of attention in late 2006 and early 2007, while waiting for the version of "ALICIA". The program is free, as in 100% Open Source and 100% free of you having to pay for it.
The script has issues, though. Please read further.
How Does phpIzabi Compare?
phpIzabi ALICIA is a good, free script. But I don't truly feel right about comparing it with a paid script.
First off - yes, it looks pretty good out of the box, but it's not easy to customize the way you'd like.
It doesn't have a great support system like many other scripts out there, hence the word "free". So, when looking for support with phpIzabi, you get what you pay for.
On that note - you will run into a lot of "customizers" or "experts" who will try to sell you some junky add-ons to make a quick buck... so, if you're going to try out phpIzabi, please check out the .com site, not the .net site!
Both have forums, but the .com site provides you with a much better forum, using vBulletin, rather than a built in system that lacks ease of use. (I'm talking about the actual support community for phpIzabi, not the product... please do not get these confused!)
What's the different between phpFoX and phpIzabi?
SUPPORT. You do get what you pay for. Let's be honest here... if you're running a community and get 4,000+ members and all of the sudden you experience problems - who do you run to for help?
Nobody, that's who. You have to wait a long time in order to get help OR you pay someone a few hundred bucks to fix the issue(s).
I like phpIzabi, but I'm also very good with php. That's the difference... and even that doesn't keep me from using a paid script. Who wants to be wasting time writing or fixing code - when it's all right there, thanks to paying up front?
In my opinion, phpFoX beats phpIzabi hands down. There's just no good reason to save money in the frontend, knowing you'll waste money in the backend of the site.
But, in the end - it's obviously your choice. Just don't say I did not warn you!
The script is very attractive and it does work pretty well. But, it's not easy to customize. With that being said - they DO have some free customizations, addons, themes, etc. at the phpIzabi .com site!
(Stay away from the .net site and save money)
